Synopsis
Finnish Lapland, 1984. After an absurd series of events, Niina (Oona Airola), a single mother of two children, ends up as an archiver at the local newspaper in a town where nothing happens. One day, Niina hears an enormous bang from the sky and the radio says that the Soviet Union has shot a missile across the Finnish border to Inari. Soon the whole village is filled with reporters from all over the world and as Niina knows the area and its people, she is drawn into the investigation of the missile incident and the threat of nuclear war. Then Niina meets Kai, a fighter pilot who knows secrets about the missile, and a relationship begins to develop between the two. As Niina obsesses about the missile, she must face the re-appearance of her ex-husband, all the while searching for serenity and the truth. Directed by Miia Tervo (AURORA) and inspired by the real event, THE MISSILE is a fascinating drama and political satire about personal and national limits and borders.
