Synopsis
In the spring of 1986, the explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant unsettles the daily life of a small village in western Finland. An uneasiness hangs in the air, and new safety measures are everywhere. That summer, a new girl Mimi (Anni Iikkanen) arrives in the village. She immediately shakes up the life of 15-year-old Mariia (Rebekka Baer) and fills it with radiating light. Amongst the lush Finnish landscapes, the girls find an oasis of passionate love, away from the harsh world and impending sense of doom. 20 years later, Mariia (Laura Birn) returns home to take care of her sick mother, and memories of that meaningful summer begin to rise the surface. Based on the 2011 eponymous novel by Vilja-Tuulia Huotarinen and featuring a pulsating, hypnotic 80s soundtrack, LIGHT LIGHT LIGHT explores the contradictions of teenage years, growing up, fitting in and dealing with adult issues, but also having a lack of control. Directed by Inari Niemi, this is a beautiful, sensitive coming-of-age drama about first love, memories and the uncertainty of life.
